What is the difference between Through Mode and Virtual COM Mode?

Through mode uses two apparatus of media converter, and uses like following cable connection.

serial port <--> CONTEC Device <--> LAN <--> CONTEC Device <--> serial port

Virtual COM Mode is a mode in which CONTEC device is used by making it look like an additional COM port on a PC, and one CONTEC device is used as one serial port.
